Statement of Biodiversity Priorities
for Humberhead Levels

The LNRS consists of a Statement of Biodiversity Priorities, which use local knowledge and expertise to describe Greater Lincolnshire and its natural environment and identify local people's priorities and potential opportunities for recovering and improving biodiversity.

The Statement includes 58 priorities and 184 actions across the following themes:

  • Woodland and Trees
  • Grassland and Heathland
  • Freshwater Wetlands
  • Coastal and Estuarine
  • Rivers and Streams
  • Lowland Fen and Raised Bog
  • Farmland
  • Nature in Built Environments
  • Landscape Scale and Ecological Networks
  • Species

Priorities & Measures

The Humberhead Levels is a highly agricultural, flat and low-lying landscape at the northwestern edge of Greater Lincolnshire. The area is crossed by the Rivers Trent, Idle and Torne, the Stainforth and Keadby Canal and a network of drains. Arable fields are divided by ditches used for drainage and tend to be without hedgerows.

The NCA includes the Isle of Axholme, which lies on a low mudstone ridge above the lower ground. It is noted for extensive evidence of medieval open strip fields of international significance. Crowle Moor, Epworth Turbary and Haxey Turbary are remnants of the vast and complex moor, bog and fen that historically surrounded the once waterlogged head of the Humber. These habitats have been vastly reduced over the previous centuries due to agricultural intensification and urbanisation.

Mapping Explanatory Notes

The attached document describes principles and caveats used in the development of the LNRS which should be considered when using the Statement of Biodiversity Priorities and the Local Habitat Map.
